The Kiel Area School District offers English as a Second Language (ESL) services to those students who are English Learners (EL). At the time of enrollment, all students are screened to determine if they may be an English Learner based upon the home language survey included in the enrollment form. If the home language survey indicates that the child has been exposed to another language other than English, then the EL teacher screens the child within the first 30 days of attending school to determine he/she is an English Language Learner in need of services.
If the student is determined to be EL, then the EL teacher develops an Individual Learning Plan (ILP), and consent for services is obtained from the parents. Once the child is determined to be an EL student, then they must participate in the ACCESS testing each January to assess their progress with English language proficiency.
For those students serviced by the EL program, parents are notified annually of the programming available within the district. The child's Individual Learning Plan is also updated annually.
The ELL program within the Kiel Area School District provides English language and academic instruction for those students identified within the least restrictive environment. The EL instructor and interpreter/paraprofessional work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and administration to meet the unique needs of the EL students. Connections with community-based resources may also occur.
