KIEL AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT
DISMISSAL OF SCHOOL FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER
SCHOOL CLOSINGS
School closings, early dismissals and delays are primarily announced via the districts automated telephone system, “School Messenger”. Periodically, this system may be used to communicate other important announcements or emergency information.
When it becomes necessary to dismiss school because of inclement weather, the decision is made by the District Administrator. His decisions are based upon weather conditions (roads, etc.) that exist at the time the decision is made. In situations where snow is a factor, research of weather conditions begins at 4:30 a.m. Information from the weather bureau and representatives of county and township road departments is considered along with added information from the district’s transportation carrier and neighboring school districts who use the same transportation carrier as our district. Every effort is made to reach a decision by 6:00 a.m. - 6:30 a.m. at the latest. In some cases, a decision may be made to start school late instead of dismissing for the entire day in order to avoid making the day up later in the school year. The following radio and television stations are notified when school is dismissed or delayed for inclement weather or emergencies of any kind.
